Academics Worldwide Issue Solidarity Statement as Universities in Rojava Face Escalating Attacks
A group of academics and researchers from across the world has issued a statement of solidarity with universities in Rojava, also known as Northern and Eastern Syria, amid escalating violence and deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the region.
The statement, a copy was sent to The Amargi, comes as fighting intensifies around several cities in northeastern Syria, raising concerns over civilian safety, access to basic services, and the continuity of education. Signatories say they have longstanding academic partnerships with institutions in Rojava, including joint research projects, conferences, and educational programs developed under wartime conditions.
According to the statement, universities in the region, among them the University of Rojava, Kobani University, and University of Al-Sharq, have come under growing pressure as clashes expand and security conditions worsen. Academics warn that campuses are increasingly serving as shelters for displaced civilians, while teaching activities have been severely disrupted.
The universities themselves released a parallel appeal, describing shortages of electricity, water, and essential supplies in several areas, including Kobane, which they say has been encircled amid ongoing hostilities. In Qamishli, the statement reports drone activity near university facilities and difficulties for students trying to reach family members in other parts of the region.
Academic signatories have called on colleagues, educational institutions, and professional associations to raise awareness, engage policymakers, and support humanitarian efforts. They also urged universities and academic bodies to monitor developments closely and to advocate for the protection of civilians, students, and educational infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The appeal reflects growing international concern over the impact of the conflict on higher education and civilian life in Rojava, where universities were established during years of war to expand access to education in the region.
